Deaths from abdominal forms have decreased considerably, but in
meningeal and other forms of the disease the decrease is much less in
degree. The total rate has steadily improved. Thus between 1881-1890
it averaged 297 each year. In the next ten years, 1891-1900, the
average mortality was 254 per 100,000, being 264 in the first half of
the decade, 244 in the second half, and during the last three years the
rate has further sunk to 229, 223, and 213.
City of Westminster.—The rates for the City of Westminster are
given for 1901, 1902, and 1903, and show a decrease all round:—
The City of Westminster.
Year. | Pulmonary. | Abdominal. | Meningcal. | Other. | Total. | |||||

Three years | 978 | 179 | 43 | 8 | 86 | 15 | 79 | 13 | 1,186 | 216 |
The figures are then:—

1901 | 165 | 167 | 229 | 202 |
1902 | 161 | 159 | 223 | 199 |
1903 | 155 | 154 | 213 | 178 |
While a diminution in the deaths in the City as a whole is taking
place, it is by no means equable, as will be seen by examining the
figures for the old divisions of the City, then the wards, and finally the
145 smaller enumeration areas. The rates vary to a great extent in the
old divisions.
St. George Hanover Square Division—The phthisis rate for ten
years and the total rate for seven years show slight variations. The
