abate nuisances. I also suggested to the Committee the
propriety of the Vestry taking steps to provide a mortuary.
Each of the district vaccinators appointed an additional
day in the week for vaccinating or re-vaccinating the poor
in the in-wards and the out-wards. Hand bills, recommending
the immediate removal of manure were posted
in all the Mews, and others, containing the best measures
for preventing Zymotic diseases, were sent to every house
in the Parish. In March the disease began to extend to
some of the upper classes and was spreading throughout
the Parish. 186 cases were recorded, and many others no
doubt were wilfully concealed, which greatly increased
the risk of contagion.
The following is a list of the deaths from small-pox in
the Parish:—
June 24th, 1870, Landsdowne House, f, aged 50, governess,
vaccinated in infancy.
January 11th, 1871, No. 29, Brewer-street, m., aged 38,
unvaccinated.
January 14th, „ 76, Hanover-street, m., aged 13
weeks, unvaccinated.
January 20th, „ St. George's Hospital, nurse, aged
32.
January 29th, „ No. 2, Hindon-street, f, aged 5
years.
January 30th, „ No. 2, Hindon-street, f., aged 41
years.
January 30th, „ No. 69, Hanover-street,f., aged 19.
January 31st, ,, No. 69, Hanover-street, f., aged 8
days.
February 4th, ,, No. 2, Warwick-place, North, m.,
aged 47.
February 11th, ,, No. 319, Vauxhall-bridge-road,f".,
aged 22, milliner.
