occupied three.room tenements, of which 218 were more than two
in a room; 1,425 persons occupied tenements of 4 rooms and upwards,
of which 182 were more than two in a room. Therefore 27
per cent. of the population of the area was overcrowded.
The area comprises 775 dwelling houses of which 40 were
unoccupied at the time of the inspection, 20 stables, 15 warehouses,
7 factories, 10 workshops, 4 mission.halls, and 2 common lodging.

Of the 775 houses, 163 are of three storeys, and 612 of two
storeys. Most of the three storey houses have also a cellar which
in eight cases is being used as a workshop. In six houses the back
wall is of wood, and in ten houses there is no back yard.
The houses as a whole are structually defective and ill arranged.
The rooms in the three storey houses are of an average floor space
of about 80 square feet, whilst those of the two storey houses average
65 square feet.
The site at the East end of the area is 12.6 feet and at the
West end 16 feet above Datum.
Each house, with the exceptions above.mentioned, has a small
back yard.
