PUBLIC HEALTH ACT.
During the year legal proceedings were taken in 288 instances. The
Wards in which the summonses were taken out are shown in the
following Table.

In 10 instances the summonses could not be served, owing to wrong
addresses having been given (5 eases), the defendants having gone
away (3 cases) or the necessary work having been done (2 cases). In 236
instances the summonses were withdrawn, the several defendants having
abated the nuisances complained of. In 8 instances penalties were
inflicted. Magistrates' orders for defendants to comply with the Council's
requirements were made in 31 instances, 2 summonses were dismissed,
and 1 summons was adjourned sine die.
