SECTION C.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
1. Water Supply.
The domestic water supply for the Borough is provided by the
Metropolitan Water Board. No complaints with regard to the
condition of the water were received during the year.
Routine chemical and bacteriological examinations of samples
of the water supplied are made at the Board's laboratories.
During the year 408 water supply certificates were granted in
accordance with the provisions of the Public Health (London) Act,
1936.
2. Drainage and Sewerage.
79 plans of drainage work to new and existing buildings were
submitted and approved during the year.
3. Public Cleansing.
The arrangements for collection, removal and disposal of refuse
are under the control of the Borough Engineer and Surveyor who
has supplied the following information.
Refuse. During the year 23,878 tons of House, Trade, Street,
Gully and Market refuse were collected and disposed of at the
controlled tip.
In addition 18,656 tons of refuse from a neighbouring borough
were also dealt with at the Council's Refuse Disposal Depot.
Street Cleansing. Two mechanical street sweeper collectors are
employed for sweeping and three machines for street washing
and watering.
Gully Cleansing. Four gully emptiers are in service and the
number of gully cleansings carried out during the year totalled
11,662.
4. Closet Accommodation.
The water carriage system is in operation throughout the Borough.
Arrangements for the supervision of the sanitary conditions at a
Fairground which is established in a part of the Borough from time
to time have continued as in previous years. Elsan closets are in
use during the period of the Fair.
Routine inspections are carried out by the staff of the department.
