Most people will admit that knowledge is better than ignorance, that
to know the truth and to live by it is to enter into a richer and more
efficient life; and, while knowledge is good in and for itself alone, it is
indispensable as a means towards self-harmony and social well-being.
The task of education is two-fold, viz.: to make knowledge available,
and to stimulate the mind to receive it and to act upon it. Day by day
the advance of science goes on, bringing more and more knowledge to be
used for the benefit of humanity. Almost daily, reports come through
from the front line of research, telling of yet another position taken from
the enemy called Ignorance. Not always, however, is the position
consolidated and occupied. Once it could be said with truth that the
people perished for lack of knowledge; now this is no longer the case,
