inspectors in this connection. No action has been taken under Section 3
of the Housing Act, 1925, owing to the difficulties experienced in
recovering the cost of works executed by the Local Authority.
All the houses in the Borough have waterclosets. In a few older
tenements the sanitary accommodation is common to several families.
Unhealthy Areas.
Surveys and inspections have been carried out with a view to declaring
groups of unfit houses as "clearance " or "'improvement'' areas.
After carefully considering in all 14 areas the Housing Act (1930)
Committee prepared a reply to the questionnaire of the London County
Council in connection with the preparation for the first quinquennial
statement on housing. This was eventually approved by the Council
and was forwarded to the London County Council.
The following is an extract from the statement:—
(1)
Housing Act, 1925—Part III.
(General Powers of Local
Authorities.)
Particulars of any new houses
(including the number of houses)
which the Borough Council propose
to provide (other than those required
for re-housing purposes).
(N .P ,=Non-Parlour.)
Recommendations of
Sub-Committee.
An average of 50 houses per
annum during the next 5 years,
say—
60% A2 Type (2 bedrooms, N .P.)
30% A3 Type (3 bedrooms, N .P.)
10% A4 Type (4 bedrooms, N .P.)
Provided that sites can be obtained
and provision made for
tenants dehoused under Clearance
or Improvement Schemes.
The Committee recognise that it
may be necessary to appropriate a
proportion or the whole of these
houses for re-housing if it is not
possible to provide accommodation
on Clearance or Improvement areas
which may be undertaken during
the five years.
