(1b) HOUSING CONDITIONS.
General observations.
A large proportion of houses in the Borough were built 60—70 years
ago; certain groups of houses are much older, probably 150—200 years
old, while some are only about 50—60 years old. The prevalent type of
house is a two-storey brick building with 5 or 6 rooms and erected in rows,
but there are a number of larger houses in various parts of the Borough.
A number of basements are used as dwellings, many of them being
unfit for this purpose. The majority of the houses originally built for
occupation by one family now house two or more families, and this
indirectly results in increased wear and tear of the structures.
