The work of the Dispensary was handicapped during the year by the
absence for five months, through illness, of the Tuberculosis Officer,
Dr. W. C. P. Smith. For most of this period, however, we had the able
and conscientious services of Dr. H. B. Hodson as temporary Assistant
Tuberculosis Officer.
(c) Residential Institutions:—
(a) Sanatoria, hospitals and homes available under the
London County Council scheme for both pulmonary and nonpulmonary
cases.
(b) St. Andrew's Hospital. (London County Council.)
(c) Occasional In-Patient letters for hospitals or homes,
obtained from charitable sources.
(ii.) In the case of administrative counties, precise particulars of arrangements
for co-operation with Sanitary Authorities and their officers.
The London County Council is the County Administrative
Authority.
(iii.) The nature and extent of co-operation with general and special
hospitals, school clinics, and other institutions .
(a) General Hospitals.—The Dispensary is “linked“ to the
London Hospital under the London County Council scheme for consultative
purposes. Cases of lupus are sent to the London Hospital for special
treatment by means of the Finsen Light and general phototherapy.
These cases are treated on the authority of the Tuberculosis Officer, the
cost of the treatment being charged to the Borough Council. During
the year, 4 new cases and 2 old cases have been undergoing this treatment,
a total of 824 applications of one or other form of light having been given.
A few cases requiring general arc-light treatment (mainly cases with
discharging sinuses) were also referred to the London Hospital. There
were 7 such cases and 381 applications of light were given.
(b) Special Hospitals:—
patients requiring refills following upon the induction of artificial
pneumothorax are by arrangement sent to either Brompton, Victoria
