served by the appointment of an Arbitartor as suggested, and were o
opinion the representation should be considered as a whole, and that
responsibility for dealing with the area ought not to be thrown upon
the Borough Council by excluding the greater part of the area
represented.
The Council concurred in this view, and directed that the Home
Secretary and the London County Council be so informed.
The Home Secretary in reply stated he was informed that plans,
etc., had been prepared and tenders invited by the Limehouse and
Poplar Workmen's Homes, Ltd., for conversion of Arnolds Buildings
into workmen's homes on the Rowton House principle, and that
under these circumstan?es the London County Council could not
obtain an order for the demolition of the buildings as neglected
structures, and that it seemed clear the remainder of the area was
too small to be dealt with under Part I. of the Act.
As the Committee were informed that the contemplated conversion
of Arnolds Buildings had fallen through they recommended—
That the London County Council be again urged to deal with the
Bridge Road Area as represented by the Medical Officer of Health,
under Part I. of the Housing of the Working Classes Act; and the
facts also submitted by the Home Secretary.
