MORTALITY OF CHILDHOOD. 43
the rates from premature birth, congenital defects and injury at birth in the rest of the
Borough exceed those in the insnlœ. Looking at the mortalities by causes and by ages
together, the conclusion suggested is that in the insulœ the children are more vigorous at
birth, but suffer more heavily from parental neglect and ignorance than do those in the rest
of the Borough. The mortalities by causes are summed up below in the five groups used in
other parts of this report.

Mortality among Illegitimate Children.—Among the deaths registered during the past
year in the Borough were 44 of children entered as illegitimates, including 5 of non-resident
parents. Outside the Borough there were 3 deaths of such children belonging to the Borough,
making a nett total of 42 deaths, 23 of males and 19 of females, 32 of them being under
one year of age. The infantile mortality among such children was at the rate of 214 per
1,000 births registered within the Borough, the corresponding quinquennial mean being 256.
Among legitimate children the mortality last year was 105, and the mean, 113, demonstrating
the heavy incidence of mortality among the former class. A comparison of the rates
calculated on the fully corrected numbers of births, makes the case rather worse, the
mortality among illegitimate children for last year being not only more than double that
among legitimate, but also showing no reduction from the mean rate. (See below.)
Among illegitimate male children last year's mortality was 250 per 1,000, that among female
173, the corresponding rates for legitimate males being 111, and for females 88. The causes
of death of illegitimate children during the past year, and certain other particulars relating
thereto, are set out in tabular form below.
