The comparison of the distribution by causes is even more satisfactory when rates per
1,000 births are used instead of numbers. (See below.)

The mortality rates which prevailed last year in the insnlœ specially marked out on
account of their conditions of housing, class of inhabitants, &c., are given in Table 29. It
will be seen that, with the exception of "Queen's Park" (the Estate) all the rates were
considerably in excess of that prevailing in the Borough as a whole (105). On the other
hand, except in "Clarendon Street," where last year's rate was the highest since 1905, the
mortality shows a tendency towards reduction when the rates for the five years are examined.
If the total mortality in the six insulaœ combined, the rates for the last three years are
found to be 1906, 137; 1907, 126; and 1908, 120.
The extent to which the high rates in the insulœ affect the rates of the Wards within
which such insulœ are situated, is shown from the appended statement. In Queen's Park
Ward only, is the rate raised by excluding the mortality in the " Queen's Park " insula.

In Table 30 the combined mortality rates in the insulœ are compared with those for the
rest of the Borough. The rates at ages under three months are considerably higher in
the insulœ than those in the rest of the Borough, but it is somewhat unexpected to find that
