A comparison of the returns for the two quadrennial periods 1901-04 and 1905-08 (not
reproduced here) shows that there has been a considerable increase in the accuracy of diagnosis,
shrinkages having taken place in the numbers of deaths certified under the more indefinite terms
(e.g. "cancer" and "malignant disease") and in the determination of the site of the growth.
As will be seen from the lower half of Table 20, the mortality from these growths falls
mainly on persons of mature age. During the eight years, 1901-08, only 21 deaths (and those
almost entirely from sarcoma) occurred at ages under 25 years. Below is a comparison of
the mortality at ages above 25, for each sex, recorded during the past year and the
quinquennium 1903-07.
