20 TUBERCULOUS DISEASES.
TUBERCULOUS DISEASES.
The deaths due to the various forms of tuberculosis numbered 190 last year, or 29 fewer
than the total for the preceding year (219). Last year's total included 149 deaths from
pulmonary tuberculosis (consumption), 14 from cerebral (tubercular meningitis), 5 from
abdominal (tabes mesenterica), 10 from generalised and 12 from other forms of the disease.
(See Table 17.) The total mortality (T23 per 1,000 persons) showed a decrease of 0*14 below
the mean for 1903-07 (1*37), practically all the reduction taking place in the rate for females,
which was 0'73 per 1,000 last year, while the mean rate was l'Ol. Last year's rate for
males (1'83) was only 0'01 below the mean (1'84). The mortality from "other forms"
showed an actual increase, due entirely to the higher rate for males. As regards the other
manifestations of the disease, reductions were recorded in the mortalities, those in the rates
for females being generally greater than those among the male.

The numbers of deaths recorded among the residents of the different Wards are too few
to permit of a useful tabulation for the five varieties of the disease given in Table 17. It is
more profitable to limit the classification to " pulmonary tuberculosis " and " other tuberculous
diseases" as is done in Table 18. It will be seen that in Queen's Park Ward only did last
year's mortality from pulmonary tuberculosis exceed the mean rate (rate, 1908, 1*73; mean
rate, 1*32). As regards the mortality from other tuberculous diseases, last year's rates were
below the means in all the Wards except Lancaster Gate, East, where the increase (due to a
single death) may be ignored.
