Chest Clinic, Lewisham
I am indebted to Dr. J. E. Stokes for the following report concerning the Chest
Clinic at Blagdon Road of which he is the Chest Physician.
The general trends of the last five years with work of the Chest Clinic have continued
in 1965. There is a slight reduction in the total number of attendances (excluding
after care) from 22,874 in 1964 to 20,566 in 1965 but this does not imply any reduction
in the amount of work. The explanation of this paradox is that as the amount
of tuberculosis to be dealt with decreases steadily the proportion of other conditions
treated increases and they require more complicated and intensive treatment, with a
quicker turnover. It may not be generally realised that the Chest Clinic provided a
centre for the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer of the lungs and with the
increasing integration of the work of the Chest Clinic with that of Grove Park
Hospital and other centres such patients have immediate access to all recognised
