The work is solely concerned with the environment of the patients
and their home contacts and does not include the giving of advice as to
treatment or precautions to be observed, this aspect of tuberculosis work
being continued by the staff at the chest clinic.

The number of visits paid by the infectious disease visitors during 1950 is shown in the following table:—

These visits are in addition to those paid by the sanitary inspectors
under the general heading "infectious diseases" as indicated in
table 20.
Results of visiting
During the year 536 cases came to notice for enquiries to be made
at the premises for proper investigation of the environmental side, but
in 107 of these details were not obtained. In some of the cases the patient
and his family had left the borough, in a few the patient had already
died, while in others permission had been refused or, because of special
circumstances, visits had not been thought necessary. In 429 cases
details of the environmental conditions were obtained and in the
subjoined table I have set out some of the results. For comparative
purposes these have been divided into three groups (a) where there
had been only one case reported in the house ; (b) where there had
been a second case in the house, the new case becoming ill while
resident in the borough; and (c) where there had been a second case
in the house, but where the notification was in respect of a transfer
from another borough. The columns have also been subdivided to
show percentages of the environmental conditions found so as to make
for easier comparison.
