MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
Notification of Births—During the year 2903 births
were notified under the provisions of the Notification of Births
Act, 1803 by medical practit:oners and parents, and 1100 by
midwives. Still-births numbered 80.

Work of Health Visitors.—The work carried out by the Health Visitors is shewn in tabular form herewith:—

Milk Assistance Scheme.—Under the above Scheme, the
Council are empowered to grant a supply of milk to expectant
and nursing mothers, and infants, either free or under cost price,
the grants being limited to necessitous cases.
During the financial year ended 31st March, 1925, 539
families were assisted in this respect, 319 being new cases,
and 220 cases continued from the previous year. Approximately
750 orders were issued on milk retailers, and 5,344 lbs. of
dried milk supplied by the Public Health Department. The
cost to the Council of this service during the financial' year
ended 31st March, 1925, was £665, of which amount one-half
is recoverable from the Ministry of Health.
