determine the capacity for work of a tuberculous adult after a
short period of years. The year 1921 has been taken as a basis
and the fate of the patients has been traced to the end of 1924.
It works out thus :—In 1921, 149 adult tuberculous
patients attended the Dispensary for the first time, 91 maleis and
58 females. By the end of 1924 29 of these had removed
from the Borough, and of the remaining 120, 58" were alive
and 62 dead, a mortality of 51.6 per cent, in between 3 and
4 years. Of the 91 males, 18 had left the Borough, 36 were
alive and 37 dead. Of the 58 females, 11 had left the
Borough, 22 were living and 25 dead. Of the 36 males alive at
the end of 1924, 16 had kept at regular work, 12 had worked
irregularly and 8 were unfit for any work. Of the 22 females
alive at the end of 1924, 11 had done house-work only and 11
had been employed in various capacities; of the latter 6 had
kept at work and 5 were unfit. Of the living patients, 27
males and 9 females had a positive sputum.
Thus, of 73 males remaining in the Borough, only 16
had kept at regular work and of 47 females only 6 were regularly
employed at the end of 4 years. Twenty of the 36 living
males were in receipt of pensions.
The following 5 tables give a summary of the work
carried out at the Dispensary during 1924.
