FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS.
Under Section 132 of the Factory and Workshop Act,
1901, the Medical Officer of Health is required to report on the
workshops and workplaces in his district, and to forward to
the Secretary of State a copy of his Annual Report.
Workshops where men are employed are placed under
the supervision of one of the sanitary inspectors, and workshops
where women are employed are visited by the women
sanitary inspectors, who also visit the homes of female
out-workers.
The total number of workshops on the Council's
Registers at the end of 1913, was 518. During the year
1467 inspections of these premises were made; and defects
to the number of 153 were found. Want of cleanliness
was reported in 45 instances. In only 2 cases was overcrowding
of workrooms found. In no case was it found
necessary to institute legal proceedings to obtain a remedy
of the defects.
In addition to the workshops mentioned in the preceding
paragraph there are 221 part-time and domestic work-places,
i.e., private houses or rooms where no power is used, and in
which only the occupiers themselves are employed.
The total number of workers employed in the 518
workshops referred to was 2073, of which number 1257 were
women, 458 men, and 358 "young persons"
