gations during the year. The details of his observations are
as follows :—laundries 115, silk mills 10, preserve works 59,
flour mills 6, saw mills 10, public institutions '20, bakehouses 10,
miscellaneous premises 24.
The duration of the observations varied from J.an.hour
to 1J hours each. In consequence of offences observed,
4 intimation notices were served.
Proceedings were taken against the proprietors of a large
steam laundry in respect of a nuisance caused by the emission
of black smoke. The magistrate made an order prohibiting the
recurrence of the nuisance, with costs against the defendants.
DISINFECTION.
During the year disinfection was carried out at 1,422
houses or premises in the Borough, a total of 3,181 rooms being
sprayed. The number of articles removed to the Council's
Station for disinfection, either by steam or the formalin process
was 45,824.
