Individual unfit houses and Parts of Houses
Action was taken under Part II of the Housing Act 1957 in respect of twentytwo
(22) individual unfit houses. Twenty (20) Closing Orders were made and
two (2) Demolition Orders. Four Closing Orders were determined.
Twenty-three Closing Orders were made in respect of parts of buildings,
i.e. mainly underground rooms and attic rooms. One undertaking not to use
part of a building for human habitation was accepted.
The modernisation and improvement of the existing Housing Stock
Housing Act 1964/69
575 applications for discretionary grant involving conversion and improvements
were dealt with and 331 approved.
371 applications for standard grant were received and 262 approved.
32 applications for Special Grant (houses in Multiple Occupation) were
dealt with and 2 approved.

Following informal and formal action under Section 15 of the Housing Act 1961 (provision of amenities) additional amenities were secured as follows

(a) Baths/showers99
(b) Water closets84
(c) Sinks/wash-hand basins69
(d) Hot water supplies52

General Improvement Areas Housing Act 1969
Work has been in progress to define provisional boundaries for a programme
of General Improvement Areas, to determine procedures involved for properly
realizing the potential of areas, and to determine the criteria by which priority
areas may be established. The programme which has been agreed by the Council
covers the declaration of fifty General Improvement Areas according to a provisional
order of priority over the next ten years. The first of these areas, the Birkbeck
Hill Area, has now formally been declared under Section 28 of the 1969 Act.
It is anticipated that five General Improvement Areas will be declared each
year and already surveys have been put in hand of three Areas in order that this
target might be reached.
The Public Health Inspectorate are actively involved in dealing with these
areas and are responsible for the following:-
