The bacterial condition of the baths showed some improvement compared with
the previous year. The agar counts were lower and no samples were found to
contain E.coli organisms.
Wood Vale Children's Home
This establishment was closed at the end of the year.
Parkside School
At the end of the year, extensive repairs to the plant were put into operation.
St. Martin-in-the-Fields School
A complaint was received that algae were growing in the bath. After repairing
the pump and maintaining a high free chlorine content level in the water, the algae
were eradicated and the clear, blue colour of the water was restored.
During the year under review both superintendents and schoolkeepers were
instructed in a new method for carrying out free chlorine content tests. Orthotolidine,
found to be carcinogenic, was replaced by D.P.D. No.l tablets (Diethyl-p-phenylene
diamine). The necessary kit and chemicals were supplied.
SEWERS
I am indebted to the Borough Engineer and Surveyor for supplying me with the
following information with regard to sewers within the Borough.
During the year a sum of £43,000 was spent on the general maintenance, flushing
and cleansing of the sewers for which the Council is the drainage authority. Part
of the cleansing works were carried out under contract using a high pressure jetting
method.
The sewers in Grafton Square consisting of 375 linear yards of sewer varying
in size between l5' and 12" internal diameter were relaid at an approximate cost
of £14,000.
NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948
Under Section 50 of the National Assistance Act, 1948 the Lambeth Borough
Council is required to arrange for the burial or cremation of any person who has
died, or been found dead, in its area if in such cases it appears to the Council
that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body has been, or are being
made.
During the year 29 funerals were arranged - 22 males and 7 females.
The amount paid to funeral contractors was £551.16.0. The sum of £333.2.2.
was received by way of grants, insurance policies and money found. The actual
cost to the Council was, therefore, £218.13.10.
