Under the Milk (Special Designation) (Amendment) Regulations 1965 there are
four designations of milk "Untreated", "Pasteurised", "Sterilised" and
"Ultra Heat Treated".
As will be seen from the previous paragraph a new special designation for
"Ultra Heat Treated" milk was made during the year and became operative on the
1st October 1965.
The requirements of this regulation are that milk is subjected to a temperature
of not less than 270°F. for not less than one second. Milk of this type is not
produced in Lambeth although it can be obtained in certain shops in the Borough.
It is also only available in pint tetrapak cartons for domestic consumers. The
majority of this type of milk appears to be exported at the moment and is useful
for ships doing round trips of several weeks.
Briefly, if the milk is pasteurised for the correct length of time at the right
temperature and is filled into a container which is sterile and does not permit
ingress of air when filled, it has been claimed that this milk will keep sound and
wholesome for six months without the use of a refrigerator. Once the carton is
opened the keeping period is no longer than that of other types of milk.
It remains to be seen to what extent this "Ultra Heat Treated" milk will be
accepted generally, but it is undoubtedly very useful as a standby so that fresh
milk is available when consumption has exceeded the amount delivered daily
and further fresh milk is required. Persons taking holidays abroad by car
might well consider it worth while to take sufficient for the trip especially where
young children are concerned.
The milk is required to contain the legal minimum of milk fat and solids not
fat and should not be mistaken for low fat dried milk which is on the market.
