Sewers
I am indebted to the Borough Engineer for supplying me with the following
information with regard to sewers within the Borough.
A sum of £31,000 was provided in the Council's annual programme for
the reconstruction of old and defective sewers and for the provision of
manholes in Windmill Walk, Darlington Road and Meadow Place.
The benefits derived from such schemes include a reduction in rat
infestation and possibly flooding although the latter is largely dependent
on the capacity of the trunk sewers.
The local sewers are under the control of the Borough Council, whilst
the trunk sewers, into which the local sewers eventually discharge, are the
responsibility of the Greater London Council.
The Council's programme of sewer reconstruction is additional to that
of repair and maintenance of sewers and of gully maintenance and replacement.
During the current year a £5,000 contract has been entered into for the
cleansing of sewers.
