In addition, the district sanitary inspectors carried out during
1937 routine duties connected with the inspection of unsound and
unwholesome food, the supervision of bakehouses, slaughterhouses,
dairies, milk shops and milk stores, ice-creameries, the
market thoroughfares, outside urinals of public-houses, smoke
abatement, the men's public conveniences, factories and workshops,
and workplaces wherein males are employed, common lodginghouses,
offensive trades, houses let in lodgings, refuse and manure
depots, etc.
A great number of visits have been paid by the inspectors in
connexion with all the premises in which infectious diseases are
reported to have occurred. The opportunity afforded by such
official notifications is taken for an inspection of the sanitary state
of the property together with a test of the drains.
Rent and Mortgage Interest Restrictions Acts, 1920-33.
During the year 21 inspections were made and 20 certificates
granted. It should be noted that since the 1933 Act a certificate,
when applied for in accordance with the provisions of the Acts, must
be granted. The administrative latitude previously permissible is
now therefore curtailed.
Action taken under section 224, Public Health
(London) Act, 1936.
In two cases only was it necessary to obtain a magistrate's
order under this section. Several other old people were induced to
enter the London county council hospital without the need for
application for orders.
