SPECIAL FEATURES OF WORK ST 1940 •
Until the commencement of mass air raids on London in August, 1940, the work
of the Welfare Centres continued on approximately normal lines, making
allowance for the fact that certain portions of the premises used by the
North and South Centres were occupied for A.P.P. purposes. After air
raids began, the services were reduced, but tended to increase again towards
the end of the year.
The Welfare Centres assisted by agreeing to the use of a proportion of their
Health Visitor staff acting as Relief Nurses for First Aid Post3, and also
assisted in the evacuation arrangements for mothers and children, the
distribution of respirators and the operation of the National Milk Scheme.
