SCHICK TESTING AND IMMUNISATION BY TOXIN
ANTI-TOXIN.
This question had a few years ago been before the Public Health Committee,
and as two Islington mothers had applied to the Medical Officer of Health
to have their children Schick tested and immunised, the Public Health Committee
authorised if necessary the expense for a limited number of applicants, but no
further requests have been received.
The matter of Schick Testing and Immunisation was again before the Public
Health Committee, when Dr. Graham Forbes' Report on the Prevention of Diphtheria
was supplied to the members of the Committee, who had also received from
the National Anti-Vaccination League copies of a booklet on the subject. The
Medical Officer of Health further obtained for the Committee information regarding
the work of Schick Testing and Immunisation, and presented a report on this
work in Edinburgh, and other information. In the provinces it was found that
Schick testing was most conveniently done at the schools when the children
had entered for their education, and were under supervision. It transpired that
the London County Council, as School Authority, although the matter had been
under discussion, were meanwhile taking no action, and the Committee in the
circumstances decided on a similar policy.
Hospital Isolation.—Of the 1,818 cases of infectious diseases notified,
1,722 were isolated in hospital, or a percentage of 95.0 while only 5.0 per cent, of
the patients, therefore, were nursed at home.
