During the year nineteen applications for grant were approved in connection with
the adaptation of fireplaces in private dwellings within the area. The total cost of the
work for which grants were approved amounted to £252 6s. 7d. of which £75 14s. Od. was
borne by the Council, £100 18s. 7d. by the Exchequer and £75 14s. 0d. by the applicant.
Holborn Smoke Control Area No. 5
This area is the portion of the Borough in the north-east abutting on St. Pancras
and Finsbury, and is separated from the remainder of Holborn by a line running south
from the St. Pancras boundary at Elm Street down Gray's Inn Road to Fox Court, then
east along Fox Court and Greville Street, reaching the Finsbury boundary at Farringdon
Road. The Council made the Order in November, 1961: it was confirmed by the
Minister of Housing and Local Government in March, 1962, and will come into operation
on the 1st November, 1962.
Holborn Smoke Control Area No. 6
This final area is the portion of the Borough in the south-west enclosed by a line
commencing at the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Great Russell Street travelling
southerly along Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross Road to Cambridge Circus;
then south-east along West Street; north-east along Shelton Street to Endell Street;
northerly along Endell Street meeting Shaftesbury Avenue and along Bloomsbury Street
to Great Russell Street; and finally west along Great Russell Street to the junction with
Tottenham Court Road. The Council made the Order in December, 1961; it was confirmed
by the Minister of Housing and Local Government in April, 1962, and will come
into operation on the 1st December, 1962.
Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933
This Act, the Poisons Rules, 1960, and the Poisons List Order, 1952/60, regulate
the sale of poisons, and every local authority is required to keep a list of persons who are
entitled to sell poisons included in Part II of the Poisons List.
During the year 1961, 35 applications were received for retention on this Council's
list. One application was received for entry on the list.
Rag Flock and Other Filling Materials Act, 1951
This Act and the Regulations of 1951, require the registration of premises where
specified filling materials are used in connection with certain upholstering and filling
processes, and require premises used for the manufacture or storage of rag flock to be
licensed.
Four premises in the Borough are registered under the Act, but no premises are
licensed for the manufacture or storage of rag flock.
