Convalescent Homes.
Four mothers and their babies were sent away. In two cases the applicant
was required to contribute towards the cost and in one half the cost was paid by
the hospital where the confinement had taken place. Three of these mothers with
babies were admitted to convalescent homes belonging to the Church Army.
Eighteen applications were granted for convalescent home accommodation for
children under five years of age; in five cases the parents failed to take advantage
of the facilities provided, Thirteen children were sent away, 11 free,
the parents of the other children were required to pay part of the cost. All these
children were admitted to the Hopedene Convalescent Home at Barnet through the
kind co-operation of Sister Hope of the West London Mission, Kingsway.
Saffron Hill Maternity and Child Welfare Centre.
Consultations in connection with this Voluntary Centre are held at the St.
Winifred Club, St. Peter's School, Onslow Street, Saffron Hill.
During the year ended 31st December, 1934, 139 children under five attended
the consultations, 37 of the total number coming from the Holborn Borough. The
139 children made 2,673 attendances.
Extra food and nourishment was provided, also convalescent treatment at
country and seaside Homes (40 mothers and 72 children); classes and lectures on
health, care of the home, food, economy and kindred subjects were held. The
Chairman and Honorary Secretary is Miss Mary Canney, 75, Lamb's Conduit
Street.
