Pneumonia.
Thirty-eight cases of pneumonia were notified during the year. Six of these
were influenzal pneumonia. Seven deaths were recorded from all forms of
pneumonia.
The 32 cases of primary pneumonia were notified at the following ages :—Under 1 year, 3;
from 1 to 5 years, 7; from 5 to 15 years, 3; from 15 to 35 years, 6; from 35 to 45 years, 3;
from 45 to 65 years, 7; and 65 years and upwards, 3. Thirteen were treated at home; 7 were
removed to L.C.C. hospitals; 10 to voluntary hospitals; and one to a nursing home; in one
case where a wrong address was given the patient could not be be traced. Six of the patients
were nursed by the Metropolitan Nursing Association under the arrangements made by the
Council, in all 136 visits being paid to these patients.
Enquiry respecting the cases of primary pneumonia elicited the following information: —
20 resided in tenement lodging houses, 4 in self-contained flats, 2 in model dwellings, 5 in
hotels and boarding houses, and 1 in an institution.
The cleanliness of the houses were reported satisfactory in 22 cases, but only fairly so
in 6 and in 4 cases no information was obtainable. The economic conditions of the families
concerned were found to be good in 7 cases, fair in 7, poor in 12, very poor in 1; in 5 cases
information as to economic oondition was not obtainable.
Influenza.
There were only 3 deaths (all males) from influenza in comparison with 25 in
1933, 12 in 1932, 13 in 1931, 1 in 1930, 44 in 1929, 3 in 1928, 20 in 1927, 8 in
1926, 9 in 1925, and 11 in 1924.
Anthrax.
No case of anthrax was notified in the Borough during the year.
Chicken-pox.
This disease is not notifiable, but during the year 1934 we received information
of 105 cases. These were visited and where necessary kept under observation.
Mumps.
Information was received from school teachers and others of 34 cases
of mumps.
