† Two of the milk samples reported to be not genuine were found to have had fat abstracted
to a small extent only, and warning letters were addressed to the vendors. In one of the four
oases in which proceedings were taken the summons was withdrawn upon proof of warranty.
‡ The pepper sample reported to be not genuine was found to contain a very small proportion
of sulphur dioxido, and letters to the vendors and producers of the article elicited the fact that
the adulterant had been introduced by the use of a bleaching agent. As a result of the action
taken, the producers agreed to discontinue the use of this bleaching agent.
** The two samples of sausages reported to be not genuine were found to contain small
proportions of sulphur dioxide preservative. In the one case, a notice exhibited in the vendor's
shop disclosed the presence of preservative, and no action was necessary. In the other case,
having regard to the small proportion of preservative used, a warning letter only was addressed to
the vendor of the sample drawing attention to the requirements of the Public Health (Preservatives,
etc., in Food Regulations.
