the food and Drugs Act only nine were reported to be
adulterated.
A considerable amount of work was occasioned by the,
inspection of stocks of food-shops damaged by enemy action
and in the examination of salvaged foodstuffs brought into
the Borough.
Although there was a scarcity of certain foods and other
foods were strictly rationed no adverse effect on the health
of the population was observed. Preparations containing
essential vitamins were made available for mothers and
children at the welfare centres to take the place of some
of the foods which it was difficult to obtain.
I should like to take the opportunity of expressing to
the members of the Council my appreciation of the goodwill
they have shown to me during the year, and my thanks
to the staff for their loyalty and devotion to duty which
has resulted in the services of the Department being maintained
during the year under conditions which have at
times placed a considerable strain upon all concerned.
I am, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Your obedient Servant.
J. B. HOWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
