FOOD SUPPLIES.
Unsound Food.
No seizure of unsound food was made during the year.
The following is a list of unsound food voluntarily
surrendered during the year:—
Beef and Beef Offal, 12 cwt. 1 qtr. 11 lb.
Pork and Pork Offal, 3 tons 5 cwt. 1 qtr. 14 lb.
Sheep, Lamb and Offal, 2 cwt. 3 qtr.-).
Fish, 3 cwt. 3 qtrs. 14 lb.
Bacon, 4 cwt. 27 lb.
Tinned Ham, 1 cwt. 1 qtr. 8 lb.
Mushrooms, 15J lb.
Apples, 3 cwt. 3 qtrs. 14 lb.
Eggs, 120.
Milk, 75 gallons.
Tinned Fruit, Fish and Vegetables, 76 tins.
Blackcurrant Pulp, 4 tons 12 cwt.
Dates, 1 ton 1 qtr. 14 lb.
Sultanas, 12 cwt. 3 qtrs. 12 lb.
Dried Egg Yolk. 14 cwt. 2 qtrs. 4 lb.
Danish Cheeses, 15.
In addition the stocks of 48 foodshops in the Borough
damaged as a result of enemy action were inspected and
foodstuffs found to be contaminated by splintered glass,
fire and water included the following:—meat, butter,
margarine, lard, flour, cereals, pickles, sauce, bread,
pastries, biscuits, cooked meat, bacon, sugar, tea, coffee,
cocoa, sweetmeats, fish, tinned foods, fruit and vegetables.
A large proportion of the foodstuffs unfit for human consumption
were salvaged for use as animal and chicken food.
Sugar, butter, margarine and flour were sold to firms
approved by the Ministry of Food for refining and
processing.
FOOD AND DRUGS (ADULTERATION) ACT, 1928.
840 samples of various foods and drugs were submitted
to the Public Analyst during the year by the Council's
Sampling Officers for analysis; 64 were found to be inferior
and 9 were adulterated. Legal proceedings were taken in
respect of 1 of the adulterated samples, and penalties and
costs amounting to 1 10s. 6d. were imposed.
PHOSPHATASE TEST.
20 samples of milk sold under the special designation
"Pasteurised" were submitted to the phosphatase test
during the year. The results of these examinations showed
that in 16 cases the pasteurising process had been properly
carried out and that 4 samples had been incorrectly
pasteurised or had become admixed with raw milk.
