Action was taken under Section 48 of the National Assistance
Act, 1948, to mitigate loss or damage in five instances. In two
cases the property was only temporarily safeguarded and in the
three other cases it was transferred to the Council's store.
Three previous cases were settled during the year, two by the
sale of the property held.
Burial or Cremation of Deceased Persons
The Council's powers under Section 50 of the National Assistance
Act to arrange for the burial or cremation of any person where no
other suitable arrangements were being made, were exercised in
respect of 12 deaths in the Borough.
The Council's expenses totalled £184 lis. 0d., of which approximately
£80 was recovered from the estates of the deceased
persons.
Registration of Disabled and Old Persons' Homes
There have been no additions to the number of homes registered
by this authority under Section 37 of the National Assistance Act,
1948.
At the 31st December, 1970, two establishments were currently
registered :—
"Alveston House"—a private home for 8 elderly ladies;
"Fairhaven"—a voluntary hostel for 25 educationally sub-normal
youths, between 16-21 years of age.
