Family caseworker efforts have continued to be concentrated on
the homeless families at 158a Plumstead High Street and on those
who have been rehoused from this unit. Staff shortages again
curtailed the assistance and benefits stemming from this arrangement.
Unsupported Mothers and Babies
During the year, the department gave financial help to 17 young
unmarried mothers at the request of the local Moral Welfare
Workers who, in their turn, placed the girls in various mother
and baby homes. (See also page 129).
Plans have been formulated in the department with the object
of providing, in the financial year 1973/4, a hostel for 12 "mother
and baby" places.
We are greatly assisted in this field by the successful operation
in the area of a Greenlow Society hostel. Supported by this
department, two mothers were admitted to this hostel, one of
whom was still resident at the end of the current year.
SERVICES FOR THE HANDICAPPED
During the year, the Borough participated in two National
campaigns, namely, the "Mentally Handicapped" week throughout
which the Council's establishments were "on view" to visitors
and the "Help the Disabled" week during which full local support
was given including a major exhibition staged in the Victoria Hall
at the Town Hall, Woolwich. Public interest, however, was disappointingly
low on both accounts.
As before, arrangements for holidays, shopping expeditions and
Christmas parties were carried through with great success.
