Abortion
During 1970, 83,849 abortions were notified throughout England
and Wales, 43,351 (55%) from N.H.S. hospitals and 37,285 (45%)
from "approved" places. Of the total, 47% were in respect of
single women of whom almost 5% were under the age of 16 years.
Some 6,025, equivalent to 7.2% of the country's total, were notified
in the S.E. Metropolitan Regional Hospital area and, of these,
2,302 or 38.2% were forwarded from "approved" places.
Detailed analyses of legally induced abortions carried out in
respect of Greenwich residents during the current year showed an
advance of 40% to a total of 583 of whom 235 (40.3%) were
