Of the 1,849 smears obtained, 10 required further investigation
giving a rate of 5.4 per 1,000 examined.
With regard to carcinoma of the cervix uteri, there were 6 deaths
recorded in the Borough during 1970 which gives a rate of 0.03
per 1,000 population. This is 0.01 more than the rate for 1969 but
it again compares favourably with that for England and Wales,
viz. 0.05.

Breast examinations increased by 78% to a total of 1,617 for
the current year. Those cases requiring further investigation
numbered 14, i.e. two more than for 1969, equivalent to a rate of
8.6 per 1,000 examined.
