FURNACES:
Sixty-five formal notifications (including 18 in 1961) have
been received of intention to instal industrial furnaces since
the coming into force of the Clean Air Act, and prior approval
was sought and given in one case to a plan submitted in 1959.
SMOKE CONTROL AREAS:
Progress was made during the year regarding the making of
Smoke Control Orders. The Finsbury (No.l) and (No.2) Smoke
Control Orders were made by the Council and confirmed by the
Minister of Housing and Local Government during the year. Action
is now being taken to implement these two Orders. A report was
submitted to the Council towards the end of the year regarding
proposals for a third area and the necessary formalities are
being proceeded with in regard to the making of an Order.
The programme of Smoke Control Areas in Finsbury was revised
in December 1961. Originally, ten to 15 years was envisaged as
being necessary to deal with the whole Borough. The Council has
now agreed to a greatly accelerated programme which, if it is
found possible to adhere to, the Borough should be completely
covered by Smoke Control areas by 1967. Details are set out
below: -
