Domestic Help Service
The number of applications for home helps increased rapidly after 5th
July, 1948, and the number of applicants remained high throughout 1949.
The number of cases in which a home help was supplied was about 410
of which 113 were maternity cases and the remainder were old people and
persons suffering from illness etc.
The average number of home helps employed was approximately 70
representing an equivalent number of 33 full-time workers.
Day Nurseries
There are two day nurseries within the Borough. The nursery at Evelyn
Street is a prefabricated building and has 60 places, the one at the New
Cross General Hospital, Avonley Road, is in a portion of the hospital
buildings and has 72 places. In both nurseries children are accepted from
a few weeks old up to the age of 5 years.
