There were 33 deaths of infants during the first four weeks of
life (or 75.0 per cent, of the total infant deaths) as compared with
25 deaths (or 71.4 per cent.) in 1960 and a percentage for the
quinquennium of 1956-1960 of 75.8.

Deaths of Illegitimate Infants.
The death rate amongst illegitimate children during 1961 was
12.93 per 1,000 illegitimate live births, as compared with 52.08 in
1960. The corresponding death rate of legitimate children in 1961 was
22.49, the ratio of mortality rate of illegitimate infants to that of
legitimate being 70 to 100. The corresponding figure for 1960 was
360 to 100.
Maternal Mortality.
There were no deaths from "diseases or accidents of child-birth"
during 1961.
The rate for England and Wales in 1961 was 0.33.
