[Report of the Medical Officer of Health for Battersea Borough]

Heat Treated Milk.

Samples of pasteurised and sterilised milk are taken at regular intervals submission to the Public Health Laboratory Service for the prescribed tests, and during the year samples as under were taken •th the results set out:—

Monthly returns of the samples taken, and of the results of the
Aginations, are sent to the Milk Division of the Ministry of
Snculture, Fisheries and Food, and they are at once notified of
y adverse report.
Ice-Cream.
Sa Thirty samples of ice-cream were taken during the year, each
P'e being submitted to the methylene blue test.

The samples were, as a result of the test, placed in the following grades:-

Where samples of ice-cream made at premises in the Borough
receive unsatisfactory reports, the premises, plant, and methods of
operation are examined, and, where possible, improvements are
suggested.
Foreign Matter in Food.
There were 5 instances of foreign matter in food dealt with during
the and in 3 of them cautionary letters were sent to the persons
concerned.
In two cases summonses were issued, the first being in connection
With a cockroach in a loaf of bread. The defendant pleaded "Guilty"
was given an absolute discharge on payment of £1 costs.
In the second case, concerning a loaf of bread containing portions
of fined safety-razor blade, the defendants pleaded " Guilty" and were
fined £50 with £2 costs.
