Deaths of Illegitimate Infants.
The death rate amongst illegitimate children during 1955 was
34.48 per 1,000 illegitimate live births, as compared with 42.55 in
1954, 70.71 in 1953, 41.23 in 1952 and 42.73 in 1951. The corresponding
death rate of legitimate children in 1955 was 24.01, the ratio
of mortality rate of illegitimate infants to that of legitimate being
144 to 100. The corresponding figure for 1954 was 241 to 100.
Maternal Mortality.
During 1955 there were three deaths from "diseases or accidents
of child-birth," which is equivalent to a fatality rate of 1.69 pe r
1,000 births (live and still). There was one such death during 1954.
In one of the three deaths in 1955 the interval between the maternal
condition and death was stated to exceed 12 months.
The rate for England and Wales in 1955 was 0.64.
