Vital Statistics.
POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the mid-year home population
of Battersea was 113,700 as compared with 114,300 in 1954, a
decrease of 600.
The estimated population at the Census taken in April, 1951,
Wa s 117,140; the 1955 figure of 113,700, when compared with this,
sh ows a decrease of 3,440 (or 2.9 per cent.).
The estimated mid-year home population figure of 113,700 has
been adopted for the purpose of the statistics contained in this Report.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered in the Borough during 1955
was 875 (443 male, 432 female). Of this number 340 were transferred
ou t, the permanent residence of the parents being outside the Borough,
and 1,205 registered outside the Borough were transferred in, giving on
balance a total of 1,740 births (896 male, 844 female, an excess of
52 males) relating to Battersea residents, and a live birth rate of
15.30 per 1,000 population. This is an increase of 0.09 on that
of 1954.
Of the Battersea births (535 live and 11 still) which occurred
within the Borough, 432 were "domiciliary births."
Illegitimate births numbered 116 or 6.7 per cent, of the live births.
The live birth rate for England and Wales was 15.0.
Still-Births.
The registration of still-births is made compulsory by the Births
and Deaths Registration Act, 1926.
Dur ing 1955 there were 23 still-births registered in Battersea, of
which 11 were Battersea parents. Twenty-one still-births occurring
outside the Borough were registered as belonging to Battersea, making
32 in all, representing a still-birth rate of 18.06 per 1,000 births (live
and still) registered. Of the 32 still-births 6 (18.8 per cent.) were
registered as illegitimate.
