Vital Statistics.
POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the mid-year home population
of Battersea was 114,300 as compared with 114,800 in 1953, a decrease
of 500.
The estimated population at the Census taken in April 1951 was
117,140; the 1954 figure of 114,300, when compared with this, shows
a decrease of 2,840 (or 2.4 per cent.).
The estimated mid-year home population figure of 114,300 has been
adopted for the purpose of the statistics contained in this Report.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered in the Borough during 1954
was 1,048 (554 male, 494 female). Of this number 406 were transferred
out, the permanent residence of the parents being outside the Borough,
and 1,096 registered outside the Borough were transferred in, giving on
balance a total of 1,738 births (927 male, 811 female, an excess of
116 males) relating to Battersea residents, and a live birth rate of
15.21 per 1,000 population. This is a decrease of 0.28 on that of
1953.
Of the Battersea births (642 live and 12 still) which occurred within
the Borough, 471 were "domiciliary births."
Illegitimate births numbered 94 or 5.4 per cent, of the live births.
The live birth rate for England and Wales was 15.2.
Still-Births.
The registration of still-births is made compulsory by the Births
and Deaths Registration Act, 1926.
During 1954 there were 29 still-births registered in Battersea, of
which 12 were of Battersea parents. Thirty-eight still-births occurring
outside the Borough were registered as belonging to Battersea, making
50 in all, representing a still-birth rate of 27.96 per 1,000 births (live
and still) registered. Of the 50 still-births 3 (6.0 per cent.) were registered
as illegitimates.
