Two cases of "Continued Fever" were notified during the
year, but subsequently cancelled, the diagnosis after admission
to hospital not being confirmed.
Cerebro-Spinal Fever.
During 1935, 3 cases of Cerebro-Spinal Fever were notified
in Battersea, and one proved fatal.
Encephalitis Lethargica.
No notifications of this disease were received during 1935,
and no death was ascribed to this cause.
In London the number of cases notified during the year was
18, and in England and Wales (including London), 336.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
There were 21 cases of Ophthalmia Neonatorum notified in
Battersea during 1935, as compared with 23 in 1934, 16 in 1933,
30 in 1932, and 37 in 1931. The rate per 1,000 live births was 10-0.
There were 4 severe cases amongst the 21 notified, 2 of which
were removed to St. Margaret's (L.C.C.) Hospital for treatment.
All cases notified during the year were reported to be cured
without damage to sight.
During 1935 the number of visits paid by nurses, under arrangements
made by the Council, to cases of Ophthalmia Neonatorum
or other inflammatory condition of the eyes of the newly-born
was 2,342. All cases were kept under systematic supervision by
the Health Visiting staff, and 158 visits were made to the homes
of these children.
