All cases of infectious illness shown on such returns are immediately
visited by the Sanitary Inspectorial and Health Visiting
staff, and such steps as may be desirable or necessary are taken
to prevent the spread of infection.
Chicken-Pox.
During 1932 there were 422 cases of chicken-pox reported, as
compared with 492 in 1931, 469 in 1930, 441 in 1929, and 632 in
1928.
Diarrhoea.
During 1932 the total number of deaths from diarrhoea of
children under 2 years of age was 22, equivalent to a fatality-rate
of 0.14 per 1,000 of the population. In 1931 there were 9 deaths
and a fatality-rate of 0.06. The rate per 1,000 registered births in
1932 was 9.49 as compared with 3.63 in 1931, 7.92 in 1930, 8.40
in 1929, and 9.48 in 1928.
One-third of these deaths occurred in Winstanley Ward, where
proper means of storage and protection of food from contamination
are, generally speaking, absent or unsuitable.
Influenza.
There were 40* deaths registered as being due to Influenza
during 1932, as against 56 in 1931, 14 in 1930, 138 in 1929, and 14
in 1928. The mortality-rate was 0.25, as compared with 0.35 in
1931, 0 09 in 1930, 0.85 in 1929, and 0.08 in 1928.
Influenzal Pneumonia was not quite so prevalent in 1932 as in
the previous year, 60 cases being notified as against 67 in 1931,
43 cases in 1930, 140 in 1929, and 51 in 1928. The death-rate was
0.13 per 1,000 of the population, as compared with 0.14 in 1931,
0.04 in 1930, 0.39 in 1929, and 0.02 in 1928.
Cancer.
During 1932 the number of deaths of Battersea residents from
Cancer was 268 (males 145, females 123) as compared with 283 in
1931, 242 in 1930, 243 in 1929, and 247 in 1928. The death-rate
from the disease per 1,000 of the population was 1.71. The deaths
from cancer constitute 14.1 per cent, of the total Battersea deaths
during the year.
