It was, however, found necessary in a few instances to put
into force the powers of the Council under the Section where
the owner failed to comply with the requirements of the notice
within the prescribed period. In such cases the Borough
Surveyor was instructed to enter the premises and to carry out
the repairs necessary to render the house or houses reasonably
fit for habitation. In such cases the works of repair were carried
out by the Council's Works Department. The total number
of houses in respect of which it was considered necessary by
the Council—in default of the owner, under the notice served
upon him—to enter and do the works of repair, was 17.
Insanitary Houses. The following is a list of streets in the Borough in which houses were found, on inspection, to be insanitary, and were dealt with by the Council under the provisions of the Housing Act of 1919, either informally or by the service of notice under Section 28 of the Act, during 1920:—
