Tuberculosis
The tuberculosis death rate has again shown a fall, being 12.4 compared with 14.8
in 1958. There has been a steady decline in the incidence and mortality of this
disease since the end of the war. largely due to the introduction at that time of
drugs which are effective against the tubercle bacillus. The dramatic improvement is
shown by the fact that, in 1949 the tuberculosis death rate per 100,000 population
was 48.4 The notification rate for tuberculosis in 1959 was 78.5 compared with
90 7 in 1958. Ten years ago. in 1949, the rate was 192.7.
