DYSENTERY
During 1959, sixty-two notifications were submitted as compared
with 111 in 1958, and 71 in 1957.
Thirty-two of the sufferers were residents of an institution
not controlled by this authority. The premises concerned were such
that it was difficult to prevent the spread of infection among the
particular type of inmates. Nevertheless the Borough Council has
been at great pains to bring about the eradication of the incidence
of dysentery.
PUERPERAL PYREXIA
Puerperal Pyrexia means a febrile condition in a woman in whom
a temperature of 100.4° Fahrenheit (38° Centigrade) or more has
occurred within fourteen days after childbirth or miscarriage.
Thirty-six cases were notified during the year, all of wich
occurred in hospital. Twenty-nine notifications referred to patients
residing outside the Borough.
Herewith is a brief summary of the actual causes of the above
cases: 2 cases were due' to genital tract infection, 6 to breast
involvement, 9 urinary tract infection, 2 respiratory tract infection,
1 kidney infection, 2 associated with Caesarean section, and causes
not known 14.
Four other cases were brought to the notice of this Department
by other local authorities; these concerned Chelsea residents whose
confinements took place in hospitals in their areas.
MEASLES
Four hundred and sixteen notifications of Measles were received
during 1959, as compared with 216 and 406 in 1958 and 1957 respectively.
SCARLET FEVER
Thirty-one notifications of Scarlet Fever were received in the
Public Health Department during 1959, as compared with 16 in 1958.
SMALLPOX
No case of Smallpox has been notified to this Department as
having occurred in the Borough since 1928, and there have been no
deaths from this disease for over fifty years.
Information was received during the year regarding one contact
who had travelled to an address in the Borough, and he was given
advice on the precautionary action that should be taken.
