LEGAL PROCEEDINGS - Food and Drugs Act, 1955.
During the year a number of complaints were received regarding
the sale of foodstuffs not being of a satisfactory nature, but in
only two instances was it deemed necessary to institute legal
proceedings under Section 2 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955 (person
who sells any food or drug which is not of the nature, substance,
or quality demanded by the purchaser shall be guilty of an offence).
The first case concerned the sale of skinless pork sausages
which were sour and mouldy and the defendants were found guilty of
the offence and a fine of £5 vas imposed with costs totalling
£8. Sbo Od.
In the second case the defendants were found guilty of the
offence of selling an article of food, namely a mouldy sausage roll
which was not of the quality demanded. A fine of £15 was imposed
with costs totalling £8. 8s. Od.

UNDERGROUND BAKEHOUSES
During the year the quinquennial review of underground
bakehouses took place, and the three remaining underground bakehouses
in the Borough were granted certificates of suitability
under the Factories Act 1937. It is interesting to note that
within the past ten years the number of underground or basement
bakehouses has been reduced from 11 to 3» either by reason of
voluntary closing or because the Council has refused to renew
the certificates of suitability. Of the 3 remaining, one is
in property which is included in an L»C.C. school development
scheme, and the occupier of one of the others proposes to
reconstruct the bakehouse above ground within the near future.
